Esthetician pay

How Much Do Estheticians Make?

The esthetician pay figure most often quoted counts employees only. But 29% of skincare specialists work for themselves, and they are not in it.

So this page sets the employee median beside what one-person businesses take in and what the highest-paying state pays, with a ZIP code tool and a calculator.

Which of these you resemble depends on where you work and whether you take commission in someone's spa or run your own room.

Commission or your own room

Commission means a share of each service; your own room means keeping the price and paying the rent

Two estheticians who published their numbers work in these two ways. Pamela Ramírez is paid a share of each service at a spa. Ashley Mulica sets her own prices in her own room.

Do you tip estheticians

Tipping is the most-asked esthetician pay topic, with 260 phrasings, and skincare specialists are on the IRS list of tipped jobs (entry 601)

Tipping drew 260 distinct phrasings on our chart, more than any other pay question.

Skincare specialists are entry 601 on the IRS list of tipped occupations[7]

Entry 601 reads "Provide skincare treatments to face and body to enhance appearance." The examples listed are "Facialist, electrologist, spa esthetician." The related SOC code is 39-5094.

Up to $25,000 can be deducted, for tax years 2025 through 2028[2]

That is the IRS's ceiling for the tips deduction. This page gives no tax advice; the IRS and a tax professional can say whether it applies to you.

For a self-employed esthetician, the deduction cannot exceed net income from the trade[2]

The IRS sets that limit for the self-employed.

Pamela Ramírez reports tips of 20 to 30%; Ashley Mulica got a $20 tip on a $454 day

Ramírez says some places bar tips, so it differs by employer. Mulica's day was 3 facials, 2 brow waxes and 1 Brazilian. These are two accounts of a day or two of work, not a rule.

Real esthetician income

One esthetician reported $927 over two days, another $440 in one day

Two estheticians published their own numbers on video. Each covers a day or two of work, and we found no esthetician publishing a full year of books we could check.

How much do new estheticians make

BLS does not publish pay by experience; the lowest-paid tenth of employed estheticians earn under $29,580

BLS publishes no esthetician pay by years of experience. It does publish the spread for employed skincare specialists, May 2025: 10th percentile $29,580, 25th $36,040, median $45,330, 75th $59,700, 90th $82,050. The self-employed are not in it.

Pennsylvania requires at least 300 hours of skin care instruction[13][11]

At a licensed school. California's esthetician license is separate and takes a 600-hour course.

Texas requires a 750-hour esthetician course at a licensed school[12][14]

Washington also sets esthetician training at 750 hours.

Washington's master esthetician level is 1,200 hours, or 450 more on top of an esthetician license[14][15]

Rules differ by state, so check your state board. We found no source for what school costs, so this page gives none.
