How Much Do Pilates Instructors Make?
No agency publishes a pay figure for Pilates instructors alone. BLS counts them in one job with personal trainers and group fitness instructors. Studios post their pay by the class instead, so this page puts three things side by side: what studios post, the official figures for fitness instructors, and what Pilates instructors have published about their own pay.
Type your ZIP code below to see the official figures for your area, then use the calculator to work out a year from your own classes and privates.
The rest of this page shows where each number comes from and which one fits the way you teach.
Fitness instructors' median pay runs from $20,800 a year in rural eastern Mississippi to $73,910 around Stamford, Connecticut
Type a ZIP code to see what employed fitness instructors, Pilates instructors among them, earn where you teach. The figures are official BLS pay data for 473 of 528 metro and rural areas; the other 55 use their state's figure. All 40,767 US ZIP codes are matched. BLS counts employees only, and personal trainers are in the same figures.
Sources: BLS May 2025 area wages for exercise trainers and group fitness instructors, the occupation Pilates instructors fall under; the Census 2020 ZIP-to-county file; USDA rural-urban codes. Where BLS publishes no figure for an area, the tool uses the state's. BLS is the only source with pay by area. No agency publishes per-class or private rates by area, so the calculator applies the area's pay level to them too; that is our assumption, not a measurement. The lookup runs in your browser and loads only a small file for the first three digits of your ZIP code from this site.
Massachusetts pays fitness instructors the most, Mississippi the least
The column is the median pay of employed exercise trainers and group fitness instructors in each state, May 2025. BLS does not name Pilates in this job. Its definition gives aerobics instructors, personal trainers and yoga instructors as examples, and its career handbook mentions Pilates once, in the job outlook. Pilates instructors belong here because the job is teaching people exercise for fitness. Personal trainers are in the figure; the self-employed are not.

BLS May 2025 state medians for exercise trainers and group fitness instructors (39-9031). Employees only; the self-employed are not counted. BLS publishes no Pilates-only figure, and Pilates is not among the job titles BLS lists for this occupation. Small states rest on few jobs. Puerto Rico is left out of the ranking.
The biggest pay decision: teach a studio's classes on its schedule, or find your own clients for privates and small classes
Most of what a Pilates instructor earns depends on whose clients fill the class. Chains and franchise studios post pay per class or per session, and their employees are in the BLS figure. Your own privates, small classes and online teaching are not: BLS leaves out the self-employed, and the Pilates Method Alliance publishes no pay figure.
The calculator below runs three ways of working.
Work out what you would make before tax
Put in your own numbers to see a year three ways: reformer classes at a chain, classes at a franchise studio, or your own privates. If you entered a ZIP code above, the rate follows local pay levels.
- Classes and sessions you teach in a year$36,000
- Your share$36,000
Example figures from the sources named, checked in October 2026. Tax, room and equipment rent, insurance, travel and unpaid planning time are not taken off. Some studios pay by head count, so the same class pays less when it is half full. Equinox pays non-session work by the hour, $15.00 to $18.57. The 3% card fee is close to a card processor's published US rate, 2.9% plus 30 cents a payment. With a ZIP code entered, the rate follows that area's fitness instructor pay level, our assumption.
Pilates instructors fall under entry 608 on the IRS list of tipped jobs by occupation, so the 2025 to 2028 tips deduction can apply
No survey measures how often Pilates instructors are tipped. The deduction helps only with tips a client actually gives. These are the federal rules as the IRS states them, not tax advice.
Entry 608 is "Exercise trainers and group fitness instructors," with "aerobics trainer, yoga instructor, personal trainer" as example titles. It maps to occupation code 39-9031, the same one behind the BLS pay figures on this page and the one Pilates instructors fall under.
It applies to qualified tips received in occupations on the IRS list. Employees and the self-employed can both claim it.
For the self-employed, the deduction cannot exceed the net income of the business in which the tips were earned.
Final IRS regulations list more than 70 occupations. Qualified tips must be paid voluntarily by the customer, not be subject to negotiation, and be reported on a W-2, 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-K or Form 4137.
What Pilates instructors and studios say they pay and earn
These cards hold the US Pilates pay figures we found published by instructors or by employers themselves. Two are instructors' own numbers, unverified, labeled with the period as they said it. Three are employers' posted pay: the starting ranges they advertise, not what anyone earned in a year. Few US Pilates instructors publish their own pay; these two are the clearest we found.
$3,844 in one November, which she called the high end of her usual month. That month's expenses were $2,842, most of it a one-off $2,500 photo shoot for her website, which left $961. One studio pays her a flat rate per class, another pays per head.
She says big franchise studios in her area pay about $40 to $42 a class and about $50 a private. She teaches about 20 hours a week. Her BASI training was $2,750 and $2,500 for its two halves, with $250 off for booking both.
West Des Moines, Iowa, posts $30 to $60, Tampa $40 to $60, Palo Alto mat classes $40 to $50 and Boulder mat classes $30 to $40. A senior role in Brooklyn's Boerum Hill posts $40 to $100 as a 1099 contractor. Most of about 175 instructor postings give no figure.
Every posting asks for at least 400 hours of Pilates education from a certification program. A Seattle mat Pilates and barre posting from January 2026 offers $60 to $80 a class. This is the employer's pay-transparency line, not an instructor's statement.
Austin posts $30 to $78 a session and East Brunswick $25 to $55, both by class size, each with a guaranteed minimum per class. Costa Mesa asks for at least four classes a week.
These are the sellers' own prices, not pay data. Club Pilates' 265-hour mat and reformer program is $2,995. A BASI mat and reformer course in Indianapolis lists $3,000 tuition and a $500 deposit due at enrollment. The National Pilates Certification Program charges $300 for its comprehensive exam, which requires 450 hours of training, and $225 for its mat exam. The Pilates Method Alliance publishes no income figure for instructors.
Comprehensive training takes 450 hours and costs $4,995 at Club Pilates; the lowest-paid 10% of fitness instructors earn under $28,800 a year
Starting out drew 16 phrasings on our chart. BLS does not publish pay by experience, so these are the training an employer asks for, the low end of the official range, and the lowest posted rate we found.
BLS May 2025, employees only, personal trainers included. The lowest 25% earn under $35,280. These are the lowest earners at every stage, not only new ones.
The National Pilates Certification Program's mat exam asks for 100 hours. BLS says group fitness instructors may begin work without certification, but employers often encourage or require it. Club Pilates says every instructor it hires trains to 450 hours or more.
Across 15 Solidcore coach postings from 2025 and 2026, starting pay runs from $16 a class in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, to $40 in California and New Jersey, some with a per-class revenue share later. Solidcore's postings never call the workout Pilates, and it trains its coaches itself, with no certification required.
Measured by us in October 2026, from Google's US suggestions. A row on certification cost was measured too, at 93 phrasings, and left off because it is about what training costs, not what teaching pays.
